CCC Company 4701-1936-1937

Co. 4701-evening muster at the Bluff Creek damsite

The vintage, 1937 Bluff Creek Dam construction photos are courtesy of the late Oliver Thomas and his sons Chester, Steve and Lewis. Only a part of the Oliver Thomas family collection can be shown here.

The CCC was started by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt with the goal of putting young, unemployed men back to work and at the same time restore, preserve and enhance much of the infrasructure of the country. My father, Virgil Marion Perry and my shirt-tail uncle, Chester Oliver Thomas, served with the CCC in Company 4701 at Kingsdown, Kansas. Their company built a dam 14 miles south of Kingsdown on Bluff Creek. After the dam was finished, the lake became Clark State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Management Area. The Clark State Fishing Lake is in a beautiful setting in the wide open spaces of Western Kansas. Wildlife is abundant.
